Gout is a form of arthritis. There are really no gout “cures”. There are, however, natural gout treatments.
When excess urid acid forms sharp crystals and attacks a joint, OUCH – you have gout. Very painful. Skin swells and becomes an angry red or purple. Big toes are favorite targets, but any joint will do.
Uric acid formation is normal when our bodies break down protein by-products named purines. In most people uric acid dissolves in the blood, goes through kidney filters and is passed in urine. However, those who are susceptible to gout attacks either make too much uric acid or have trouble getting rid of it. Or both.
We have weapons we can use in the war against gout attacks.
- Slim down if overweight. Slow and steady weight loss is always the best.
- Limit or eliminate alcohol for two reasons.
- One, beer, wine and liquor increase the production of uric acid.
- Two, alcohol impairs the kidneys ability to get rid of it.
- Drink 8-12 glasses of purified water per day. There are many ways to have purified water. By the pitcher. A purifier at the tap or faucet. We have a whole house system (because our water is really bad here in Hawaii).
- And, last but not least, eat fruits and vegetables. Cherries and dark berries seem to be good gout treatments.
Purine-rich foods to avoid. Any organ meat – liver, kidney, sweetbread. Sardines, anchovies, mackerel, asparagus, mushrooms, and beans.
